Today from Meaux, France, we have possibly the most Jalop of french rides. A diesel, stick, 4x4 wagon, by Dangel. Dangel made 4x4 versions of the 504 and 505, and still converts cars for Peugeot and Citroen today. Built for pretty serious off road duty, the original system was designed in conjunction with Peugeot's own engineers on the 504. Hell they even had a group B 504 pickup that used this system.

This 89 505 GRD is much more sedate than that, having something like 85 horsepower. Pretty nice condition. I think the last time I saw one sell on these shores it went for around 15 grand, so the equation is pretty simple. I could have it over for 13 all in, although that would depend on the production date. If it was 12/88 then all would be ok in a few months. Is it rare and crazy enough to be worth that kind of coin? Kind of like a French AMC Eagle... !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

I had a Peugeot 504 diesel wagon, 4 speed that I adored...so I'm a fool for a car like the one seen here.

Just by existing, this car makes the world a better place.

I think any and all Oppos would agree that we're fools for a diesel 4X4 wagon that makes you row your own, especially when they're weird and French.

*envies*

I drove mine for 6 years and gave it to a buddy when the ball joints were shot and I didn't want to spend the money to replace them. He did it himself. He then drove it for 8 more years...what finally killed mine was the electrical system and small fires from insulation failure. Oh, and my car replaced his 504 diesel wagon that threw a connecting rod. Here's a photo of both; mine's on the right.

Too bad. Those ball joints can be done in a very short amount of time (if you can find em). That is a great picture, big USA bumpers and all. looks like same bottom of door rusting too. What an enormous and useful car. I do have a spare XD3T kicking around, just no time to convert. A turbo should help it out

Yeah, my old car was rusting out pretty badly at the end. It was slow...not as slow as the 240D I owned at the same time. I drove 28 miles to work each way...a coworker would often fall in behind me on the two lane roads. He'd follow the Benz but pass the Peugeot. I asked why when I was doing 60 mph in each car...he said the Peugeot stank. It wasn't a smoker so I dunno. It was a very easy starter...let the glow light go out and it fired instantly, even on the rare zero degree day we had here. Took 15 seconds for all four cylinders to be hot and firing as it started on just one. The cloud of blue smoke was biblical...guy across the street came out to see what was burning :)

yeah that particular engine design fires right off after a glow (after the full 30 second relay cycle), but mine never smokes like that...I had an 83 Audi 5000 Turbo diesel that used to fill up the apartment complex I lived in with smog and wouldnt start in the cold. It was epic. It was fast though...

That zero degree morning seemed like 90 seconds...it was bloody cold. But if it was above 20 degrees, no smoke. Oh, and no block heater. And I paid $800 for the car...only thing I ever spent on it was a set of Pep Boys tires. I still have the owner's manual and the Peugeot badge off the rear hatch...not the script style as it was an '81 model. BEST seats I've ever sat in, in anything.

Agreed, they were even better when I put the sheepskins to it (to protect that fragile vinyl)

I know this is an old thread, but this stupid Kinja has no private messages, so I need to ask here:
Could you recommend a few marketplaces where Dangels might pop up for sale? Any estate/small van that could be used for a family weekend in the forest - it doesn't have to be 505, a Partner or a C15 would do, too. They seem to be incredibly elusive, this things. I am currently in Sweden so I know I will probably need to visit central Europe for it, but first I need a solid car list and extensive research on the topic.

I'll tell you what, since this really is an old thread. If you are on facebook hit me up here https://www.facebook.com/tim.weiss.7503

if not send me your contact details to puchscooter100@gmail.com

They do pop up all over the place

http://www.leboncoin.fr is one

ebay.fr once in a while

autoscout24.com once in a while

I troll around and would be happy to notify you of one if it pops up. My girlfriend expressed interest in one this weekend odd enough so I will be on the hunt. Be good to have a like minded person on that side of the ocean!
